The Potato Farm

Posted by Emily on Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

So, we live in Idaho.  What a great opportunity to visit a potato farm.  So we did, and . . .

We had such a great time.  Did you know, that in order to harvest potatoes you depend a lot on the weather?  If it's too wet, then the trucks get stuck.  If the field is too dry then the dirt clods won't break up. Did you know that Idaho grows probably 40-50% of the potatoes in the US?

So what makes a big potato? Many factors weather, temperature, moisture content, soil, and seed all contribute.

We decided that we wouldn't ever be farmers because we surely don't know very much.  And 250,000 acres is only a "small fish" in the big pond of Idaho farms.  We have a potato field right behind our house and we really enjoy watching the farmers come and go.  But I think that's as close as we'll get to "farm"-life.
Thank you to Brad Reed for showing us the process of potato harvest and taking us through the potato fields.
